Carcross/Tagish First Nation (C/TFN) launched Singletrack to Success (S2S) in 2006 to create a world-class mountain bike destination in Carcross, Yukon – in a grassroots, community-based way. By getting youth from the First Nation back on the land of their Traditional Territory, Singletrack to Success has built a celebrated (desti)nation, one trail at a time.
Over the years, more than 60 C/TFN youth have built – and continue to maintain – an incredible 65 km network of mountain biking and hiking trails on the sacred site of Montana Mountain. The trails draw thousands of visitors each season and have garnered global attention, including “Epic” designation by the International Mountain Bicycling Association.
Beyond the eco-tourism benefits of the project, S2S’s greatest success is rooted in its positive impact on the youth themselves. As part of the S2S summer trail crew, the youth have meaningful training and employment opportunities. Most importantly, they achieve a strong sense of pride and develop capacities to be leaders in their community as a result of their hard work.
In recent years, Singletrack to Success’ work in Carcross has inspired other (desti)nation trail-building projects with First Nations youth across the Yukon.
